20 Oct 2011 - World Superbike Rd 10 Portimao (News)

What a great season! I just finished the final round of the European superstock 600 championship in Portimao, Portugal. The circuit is definitely my favourite! The layout is amazing with the steep hills and sudden drops in elevation, not to mention the perfect weather!

There were 36 starters at this round with the surprising number of wild cards! We struggled in qualifying to get a good set up in the front of the bike, as it would always lose grip when braking for the slow corners. My qualifying time was 1.9 seconds off the pole time and this put me in 19th position on the grid.

All 3 riders in the team were having the same problems with front end grip, so we made some drastic changes with the set up for the race which felt a lot better.

In the race, I had a good start but got boxed in at turn one, I still managed to make 1 position on the first lap. As the race went on, I was fighting in a 5 rider battle for 8th position. I made a small mistake on the last lap and was unable to pass the riders before the finish line and I finished 13th. My championship result was 16th out of the 39 riders in the standings. It was quite close in the end as I was only 10 points away from 9th place.

A big congratulations to my team, MTM - RT Motorsports and Jed Metcher on winning the championship !

My first year racing in Europe has been a great experience, I have learnt so much at every race I’ve been to. I want to thank the MTM – RT Motorsports team for giving me the opportunity to ride with them this season. A big thanks to Damen leathers for the race suits and repairs, Kabuto helmets and Daytona boots for their excellent riding gear. Also a big thank you to Northlec, Nestronics, Mum & Dad, Rob Vennegoor, Ludo Van Der Veken, Swen Jenik, Thierry Vandoorne, Levi de vos and all the people who contributed to helping me this year!

Next season I am planning on riding in the same European superstock 600 championship. I strive on winning the championship next year as I now know all the circuits and have a lot more experience in riding the 600.

I am back to Australia in a couple of weeks and will continue to practice and train in the off season to maintain my fitness and come back next year strong and ready for the battle!

Ciao for now !!
