Rd 3 of the European Super Stock 600 Championship was held at the famous ‘Monza’ circuit in Italy. I was expecting this to be the toughest round of the championship as there are always a lot of fast one event riders, but I was also unable to test at the circuit unlike many riders did the week earlier.
In qualifying the team and I managed to come up with a good setting in the bike. We improved the front suspension for better corner entry and we were able to get the bike to steer through the tight chicanes much better. My lap time was 1.2 seconds off the pole time putting me in 18th position out of the close field of 33 riders.
In the second qualifying session, we had some rain and we all got some wet practice. My pace on the wet tyres was amongst the top 5 riders. I was hoping for a wet race and luckily I got it.
On the first lap of the race, there was so much spray from the other riders bikes that you could barely see. I managed to make up a few positions on the first lap and on the 2nd lap the field separated a bit and the visibility conditions improved. As I entered the corner coming onto the back straight, I tried to get a good exit to pass the pack of 3 riders in front of me by the end of the straight. Unfortunately the back of the bike flicked out while entering the corner and I high sided so I was unable to finish the race.
Unfortunately I got no points for this round. The next race is 5 weeks away at the Misano circuit in Italy. The team and I will be testing there so I’m expecting a good result.
